There are many absurdities in the way the Land Tax Act is administered, but here is a glaring one. People who are wrongfully served with notices that they are liable to be rated for properties which they do not possess;"ftbi: or wBiSIT Iffiey* know any more than does.the man fin the moon, are compelled to make affidavit of the fact their being the. _ wrong pgjMes^ and at. tlieir own cost, they must stamp "the, forms of affidavit ! An imbecile and grossly unjust way of increasing the revenue surely., And.as the names of those who are compelled to disclaim acknowledge, of landed property sought .under the Act to be affixed to them, is legion, this absurd feature of the Act is found Very oppressive. . In Philadelphia a murder trial has been the occasion of a very forcible dramatic situation. The man had been convicted of killing his own daughter under circumstances t>f aggravated brutality, ..T^e defence showed that he had always been a good and humane man until he sustained a severe injury to the skull ; but the jury, after hearing from the medical experts that there was no trace of permanent injury. r , found him guilty. 'While* receiving' -MB 1 ' sentence, however, the man committed, suicide in open court, by swallowing a fem 4 grains of strychnine. Foaming at itier* mouth, and writhing in muscular agony, he was removed to a cell to .die., ; And then, on the post mortem examination, .it was,, proved that there had been really a fractureof the skull, and that the man was actually irresponsible.
