WELLINGTON. This Day. The case of Arihi v. Hon. H. R. Russell was before the Supreme Court yesterday, but was not concluded. AUCKLAND. This Day. Joseph Newman has lodged a petition with the Returning Officer against the return of Dr. Wallis, and Mr. J. W. Hurst on the grounds of bribery, corruption, and illegal practices at the polling. CHRISTOHURCH. ' This Day. There are now 545 men on the Weka Pass section of the Amberly and .Brunnerton Railway. No more will be taken on, but if there should be any unemployed left they will be put on the Opira branch railway, near Albury. On Tuesday night, some person got into the bailiff's department at the R.M. Court and burnt between 250 and 300 summonses and a lot of other papers. NAPIER. This Day. The Borough Council met yesterday afternoon to hear objections to the proposed permanent levels of the streets. There were many objections by persons who would be compelled to raise their premises. Finally it was decided to take a poll of the ratepayers on the subject on the 15th instant. Councillors talk of resigning in a body if their proposal is reversed by the ratepayers. GRAHAMSTOWN. This Day. A special to the Thames Star says the Ngatihako are beginning to fear that the inaction of the Government bodes some-thing-serious for the tribe. Probably in the direction of confiscatian of land. They had endeavored to entice members of the police to the settlement on various pretexts ; but the constables were not to be had. It is stated they wish to get Europeans as hostages, and their surrender of the aggressors. At the Harbor Board last night much dissatisfaction was expressed with Sir John Coode's report. Information has been received that Sir George Grey cannot legally resign the Thames seat until 30 days after the opening of Parliament.
