Political Gossip.

Wellington, This Day. Sutton and Hursthouse are Opposition whips. The party numbers about 38 votes certain, and there are several waverers. An amendment will be moved on the address. The Government seem to have given offence by getting Andrews and Hurst to move and second the Address in Reply to the Governor's Speech. Some of the young members of less pronounced views seem to think themselves slighted. McOaughan, after a good deal of vacillation, is said now to have finally 7 decided to vote agai.ist the Government. Some of the Nelson contingent still sit on the proverbial rail. The position of parties at present is rather uncertain, but probably the Government will have a small majority on the first division. The general impression, however, is that Sir George Grey will have to retire before any business can really be done. Outside of his Auckland phalanx there are not six members in the House who are not anxious to be rid of him. The opening ceremony yesterday was not a very brilliant one. The Naval Brigade furnished the guard of honor, and the attendance of the general public was not large. When the members of the House were called to the Council Chamber, Sir G. t Grey followed them and went iuside .the Council Chamber for a for moments. It was the first time he ever attended ou the Lords.
