MEDICAL ETIQUETTE.
[To the Editor of the Herald.] Sib, — Mr. Wm. Adair's letter in last evening's issue* dues not demand a jengthy answer. It is a spiteful effusion from beginning to end, and is not, as he saya, written in the puolic interest, but from private ill-feeling — the result of an' old quarrel with me. If Mr. Wm. Adair thinks that money can do every tiling, and that because he is able to pay, he can order medical gentlemen about as he likes, he is very much mistaken. , Mr. Adair, speaking of medical advisers, says : '" I believe in free trade in this business as in others. " Surely Mr. Wm. Adair knows that the medical profession is not *'a business." Perhaps he thinks grocery & profession. W it li regard to his public complaint about me, I have been strongly advised not to notice it, but as you, sir, have thought fie to write a leading article on the subject, I will state the facts. Nearly three weeks ago Mr. Adair sent his servant asking me to visit his child. I at once consented to g", enquired the symptoms, and went to the chemist's for medicine. At the chemist's I learned Dr. Jaokson had;, prescribed for Mr. Adair's cnndren that very day. Not wisuiug to interfere with another doctor s paiients when he was at hand, 1 wrote ihe memo complained of, and despatched Dr. Jacks->n as quickly as possible. Tue case was not one of any danger, nor* was it represented to me as such.
The conclusion of Mr. Wm. Adair's letter I cauuuot of course notice. Mr. Adair being a popular man in this district, (I) his opinion, no doubt, carries weight. : ' 1 might, however, suggest Sir Wm. Gull or Mr. Paget, as. 1 " tirst class medical p. aotioionera. '' I oannot say whether their idea of etiquette is " diseased " or not, but if either consent to come, 1 have no doubt a tew of Mr. Wm. Adair's ten- pound notes would make them conform to his fancy. — L am, <fcc, Hy.^ Poixror
