The verdict was to the effect that death was accidently caused ; but a rider was attached blaming the contractors for the slight construction of the tunnel, and recommending that the Municipal Council should look into the present system of excavating practised iv Napier. The Muncipal Council have taken m hand the matter of raising subscriptions for the widows and children of the victims of the accident, and no doubt a good sum will be collected. A meeting of members of the Small Farm Associations was held last nighty at which a petition to Parliament was adopted, praying for modification of regulations respecting residence and time of paying the deferred payments. A deputation from the Working Men's League waited on the Premier and Minister for Lands yesterday, to urge the necessity for providing working men with meana of settlement on the country lands. The Premier said the Government intended to reintroduce a Bill framed last session which would answer the purpose the deputation had m view. { The Bill would reduce the price of land : on deferred payment, fixing it at 30s. ; but leaving it to the land Boards to increase the price for choice lands. Another proposal was to take powerß to survey lands m the vicinity of Public Works, and sell them under orders m Council, fixing the terms of payment, and making the size of 'sections from a quarter-acre to 40 acres, the majority to be ten acres to meet cases of men employed on publio works, who could spend half their time m improving their land. AUCKLAND. This Day. Tlie surveyors at Rangiriri have received instructions to desist surveying at Waikare Lake, for the present, and to go on working m the higher district. Some of the Natives at Rangiriri say it is not their people who are causing trouble, but the Natives from the King country, who came down to Rangiriri for the express purpose of stopping the surveyors. Taipara has gone to Piako to warn the Natives there of the consequences of joining the Ngatihako's. The Thames authorities advise the Government to arm the Waitemata settlers for self-protection.
