MELBOURNE. Tuesday. The Government have signed a convention with the P. and O. Company, providing for the discontinuance of the ■Southampton mails. It is intended to prosecute the directors and managers of the Provincial and Suburban Bank for conspiracy. COOKTOWN. Tuesday. Arrived — steamer Brisbane from Chinese ports. She brings the following news : — At Shanghai a most destructive fire occurred, extending throughout eleven streets by which 991 ' houses, were completely destroyed. The bulk of them were uninsured. Cholera is raging at Sonjuin, Mrtcho, and Looclioo, and m one district alone 10,000 have died.
