GOVERNMENT WHIPS.
We (Southland Times) notice that some misapprehension is permitted to exist m quarters that should be better informed respecting the emoluments attached to the position of " whips " of the Assembly. The initiated are well aware that " whips "do receive something for their services — those of the Opposition — from a fund contributed by members, whilst the Government whips are supposed to be paid m a similar manner, although they sometimes are remunerated out of the native or secret money. When the Grey Government came into power a whip, that we could name, received a cheque for £150, whilst an outside spy received a cheque for £100 as a loani which has not, and never will be paid. The regular allowance to whips is that each has a room, and the "run of Bellamy's." They are allowed as much as they and their friends may like to drink of the best contained m Bellamy's cellar. After all said and done, the position of whip is worth having. Who can tell what the secret money supplies ?
