CATHOLIC CHURCH CONCERT.

At the Catholic Church Concert, held last night m McFarlane's Hall, there was a large attendance, and m more than a monetary point of view was it a complete success. It was an admirable conception to have a concert on the night of the election, as it not only arreatly conduced to the large attendance, but m a considerable measure to calm and sooth, as good music invariably does, the over excitement consequent upon such an event: The programme was excellently arranged and faithfully and artistically executed ; indeed we had hardly any idea that such a rich treat was m store for us. The first part consisted of the opening chorus " Away," rendered: by the members of the Church Choir, assisted by Messrs. Chrisp, Sigley, and Taylor, and was unexceptionallygOod, all the various parts being correctly and harmoniously Mended. The next song, " The Heart Bowed Down," rendered by Captain Chrisp m his splendid basso voice. Thiswas followed by the very difficult and intricate song of "Vashti,'' sung m a very creditable manner by Mrs. Orr. who possesses a rich and cultivated voice, combined with distinct intonation and unmistakeably evidenced a complete mastery (if we may use the word) of music. The trio of "Ye Shepherds tell me," by Mrs. Henderson, Miss Schultz, and Mr. H Robinson, was as perfect m parts as it could possibly be, each solo being suited to the voice, and the whole rendered m an, accomplished musical style. " Ring on Sweet Angelus," by Mrs. Cooper, followed. This song was ' undoubtedly adapted to her sweet penetrating voice, and was received wjth appreciation by the audience, as indeed all songs she may render always are. The violinoello solo " Vinarrella," by Mr. H. Humphries was skillful and musical, and m saying this we do not exhaust all the praise he is justly entitled to. The last song of the first part was that of "Remember," by Miss O'Meara who acquitted herself well, and could rightly claim the applause which greeted her for the successful manner m which the very difficult piece was sung. Part II consisted of "a piano solo by Mr G. J. Browne, followed by " Come back to Erin " by Mrs. Jones, whose voice has lost none of ita charms with Gisborne musical patrons. This was noticed by the fact of an encore being demanded, m response to which she gave " Constance. Then there was "Music on the Wind" by Mrs Orr, followed by a duet, entitled "The wind and the harp," by Mrs. Cooper and Miss Schultz, which was rapturously received, and arepetiton of the last verse was given. Mr. H. Robinson then sang " The Bell-ringer " m his full clear and basso voice, which is undoubtedly one of a very high order and assisted by the possession of a thorough knowledge of music. In responding to an encore, he gave the descriptive ballad, " Wrecked and saved " " Loves request," by Mrs. Cooper, brought the musical entertainment to a close. We must not omit to mention that Messrs. Browne, and Humphries, and Mrs. Cooper, accompanied the various songs on the piano, and also Mr. R. Kelly's services. : . At the close of the entertainment, the Rev. Father Chastagnon kindly thanked the audience for their patronage and the ladies and gentlemen who had contributed their services for the occasion. He then called upon audience to join m singin;/ the National Anthemn, and at the conclusion, he requested three cheers for Mr. A McDonald, M.H.R., which were enthusiastically given.
