[from our own correspondent.] NAPIER. This Day. The address from Mr. Sheehan to the electors of Olive appears m thiß morning's Herald. He left Auckland last night m the steamer Glenelg for Tauranga, and will come overland to Napier, reaching here <>n Monday afternoon. He will speak at Olive that evening, and at Waipawa on Tuesday evening. The poll takes place on Wednesday. The following are the entries for the Napier Steeplechase, to come off on October 20th :— Ponrere, Sloper, Awahou, Tawera, Tamatea, Baron, Abbess, Grey Momus, Loch Lomond, and Harry Mount. WELLINGTON. This Day. The result of the poll for the City. Levin, 1185 ; Hutchinson, 880 ; Hunter, 808 ; Greenfield, 409. Levin and Hutchinson were elected. A writ has been served at the suit of Mr. Clarke, C.E., upon the proprietors of , the Evening Chronicle claiming £1,000 damages for alleged false and malicious statements during the mayoral election. At the R.M. Court yesterday, Cornelius Fisher, a farmer, residing at Porirua was charged with killing a cow the property of Daniel Richards, and some sheep the property of James Floyd. He was committed for trial on both charges. Two of the accused's sons, aged respectively 18 and 14 years, were called as witnesses, but their evidence was inadmissible, neither of them understanding the nature of an oath, and never having heard of their Maker. • The New Zealand Times yesterday published the following, purporting to be a telegram from Hon. Col. Whitmore to Inglis of Kaikoura, formerly member for Cheviot, but , which, having by mistake been sent to Kaikora, Hawke's Bay, reached St. Clair Inglis of Waipawa, and by some means found its way into the columns of the Ashburton Herald : — "Will you contest Cheviot with Saunders on the platform of the Governor's speech. Our party will give you all the support we can, and if you consent your claim for consideration shall receive attention whether you are successful or not." — (Signed) " Whitmore." The correspondence on the subieet between Col. Whitmore, and Mr. Maginnity, Assistant Secretary of the Telegraph Department, concludes with the following:— "Hon. Colonel Whitmore.—J have traced the telegram sent by you to Mr. H. Inglis, Kaikoura, on the 19lh ult., and on comparing the paragraph which appeared to-day m the New Zealand Times, I find that it is not a copy. It appears to be written from memory, and materially alters the sense, especially of the latter portion. — A. F. Maginnity, Assistant Secretary. AUOKLAND. This Day. News from Paerora states that Wilkinson has returned from his visit to the Pakara's settlement, having left Pineha behind. The Ngatihaka tribe have agreed to come to the meeting at Paeoroa, but Pakera and Uepiha adhere to what they said, and refuse to give themselves up to the Europeans. Wilkinson found fifteen armed men at the settlement, and twenty unarmed. The latter are from Waitakaruru. Should the Native Council decide that the culprits are wrong, there will still be the question as to who is to take them prisoners. Eden Election— Tole, 413 ; Whitaker, 309. WANGANUI. This Day. Result of polling for two members to represent Wanganui — Bryce, 536 ; Ballance, 525 ; Fox, 473. One return has to come m, but it cannot affect the result. NELSON. This Day. At the Collingwood nomination yesterday, Messrs. Gibbs, Armstong, j|nd Huddleston were nominated. Show' of hands m favor of Gibbs. A poll was demanded. At Waimea, Shepherd, Acton Adams, and Curtis were nominated. Show of hands m favor of Shepherd. A poll was demanded. Both Curtis and Adams assert that they were nominated without their consent, but they have not withdrawn. HOKITIKA. This Day. Reid, 854, Seddon, 754 ; Dungan, 519 ; Barff, 373 ; Gumming, 17. Reid and Seddon were elected. Both are Greyites. CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. Kaiapoi election — Bowen, 407 ; Wearing, 326. DUNEDIN. This Day. Macandrew was elected for Port Chalmers by a majority of 96 over Green. INVERCARGILL. This Day. Wallace election— Hirst, 148 j Joyce, 98 ; Cuthbertson, 20. OAMARU. This Day. Hislop, 594 ; Shrimski, 553 ; Steward, 386. GREYTOWN. This Day. Wairarapa election ;— Beethan, 790 ; Bunny, 581 ; Pharazayn, 525. Beetham and Bunny elected. NEW PLYMOUTH. This Day. Totals : Atkinaon, 322 ; Sherwood, 118.
