Mr. Ormond pointed out that the election would be invalidated by the alteration made in the dates, the Returning Officer having no authority under the Act to make any alteration, and legal advice confirmed Mr. Ormond's view. * This Day, 3 p.m. Messrs. Sutton, Russell, Buchanan, and Maney have been nominated. The Court House was crammed, and a very strong feeling was manifested on both sides. The show of hands was in favor of Buchanan and Maney. A poll was demanded by Sutton. DUNEDIN. This Day. The nomination for the City took place yesterday. Messrs. Oliver, Dick, Bracken, Stewart, Macassoy, and Reeves, were nominated. The show of hands was in favor of Messrs. Reeves, Bracken, and Dick. Mr. Oliver demanded a poll, which will take place on Tuesday.

The Thames Gas Company have declared a dividend of eight per cent. Mr. Sheehan has returned from the Thames to Auckland.' Mr. J. Firth's steamer, the Kotuku, penetrated 100 miles up the Thames River to Matamata, loading there a cargo of wheat for Auckland, which was delivered there at a lesß cost than by rail. Clearing the snags up the river cost Firth £3000, and was done without Government aid. Mr. Swanson received a vote of confidence last night at Newton. The working men have formed a Political Association to match current legislation, and interview candidates in the interests of the working classes. NEW PLYMOUTH. This Day. The prisoner On* alias Hall, who escaped from gaol on Monday morning, was captured on Wednesday by a Native at Stoney River, on his way to Parihaka. He was yesterday sentenced at the District Court to 'two years imprisonment. WESTPORT. This Day. Dr. Henry addressed a crowded and enthusiastic meeting at Wainangaroa. He justified the course he had taken in opposition to the Government, and received a unanimous vote of confidence. CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. Mr. Rolleston was elected for Avon to-day there being no opposition at the nomination. He is, therefore, the first member returned for the new Parliament. Wellington won the football match against Canterbury yesterday, by one goal to a touch-down. INVERCARGILL. This Day. Mr. Barr, independent, and Mr. Fieldwick, Ministerialist, were nominated yesterday. The show of hands was in favor of Fieldwick. Sir George Grey arrived from Dunedin yesterday. He addresses a public meeting to-night.
