This Day. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile agency has received the following telegram from London : — Wool — competition decreasing. Quotations are on an average of £d to Id per lb. lower than at the opening. Seedy and Bury wools neglected. Up to date, 74,000 bales have been sold, and 9,000 bales withdrawn. Since the close of last sales, South Australian inferior greasy has declined £d to Id per lb. John Joseph Walsh, Secretary to the Hibernian Society, has been committed for trial on a charge of embezzling several sums belonging to the Society. Nicholas Johnson, a sailor on board the Ned Whyte, stabbed another man named Spiers Olson, with a knife. A large meeting of the Temperance Societies was held' on Monday night, when it was resolved to subordinate all political questions and pledge themselves to support only those candidates who will seek to amend the Act of 1873, and render it workable, opposing any oompensation. .They afterwards ballotted for the two candidates who should be supported by the temperance bodies, and the choice fell on Messrs. Hunter and Levin. The New Zealand Punch will make its first appearance on September 3. The Chronicle states that a libel action is pending against the New Zealand Times, by Mr. Hutchison, Mayor, for an alleged slander in an article of last Saturday. The- directors of the D'Urville Copper Company, have received a very encouraging report from the manager at Newcastle as to the result of smelting of samples and ore.
