In consequence of a dispute between Colonel Reader and Mr. Mackay, respecting the Native prisoners m Mount Cook Barracks, the latter has resigned his position as visiting justice. It arose through Mr. Mackay relaxing the prison regulations on hiß own authority, while Colonel Reader, as head of the Armed 1 Constabulary, considered the prisoners to be under his charge, and that it was his duty to interfere with Mr. Mackay's action It is understood that Mr. Mackay has asked for an inquiry. , A deputation from the temperance bodies waited yesterday on Mr. Greenfield, one of the candidates for the City, ' and asked would he support the Local Option Bill m case of his being elected.

He replied that he would, but would endeavor to make such alterations as would render it workable. In the evening he addressed a meeting of the electors. The body of a man, named Gordon, who has been missing from his home for some time, was found yesterday m a paddock partly decomposed. It is surmised he died from exposure. KUMARA. This Day. Mr. Barff addressed a meeting on Saturday night, and received a vote of confidence. He strongly opposed Sir George Grey, but advocated Liberal measures. NELSON. This Day. Mr. Sheppard, editor of the Colonist, addressed the electors at Waimea on Saturday and received a vote of confidence.
