The fleet of the New Zealand Steam Shipping Company is advertised for sale next month. •• , The representatives of the Insurance Companies refuse to contribute anything towards a steam .fire engine. At a meeting of the City Council it was stated that 300 men are how out of employment. It was suggested that Government be urged to commence immediately a section of the West Coast Railway, near the city, otherwise the Corporation would have to support the unemployed. Morton Quin, formerly Secretary of the foresters, was yesterday committed for trial for embezzling £9 15a moneys of the order. The installation of Bro. Julius T6xward, as District Grand Master of Freemasons took place at noon yesterday. ' A deputation from the City Council waited yesterday on Hon, Mr. Macahdrew, urging him to commence ; the West Coast railway to give work to the unemployed. • Mr. Macandrew replied that as soon as the time cf the proposed railway was settled, work would be given to a large number of men. He said that he wished that fa correct statement had been' made that Wellington had been badly treated m the matter of Public Works. The contrary was actually the case, and he had been called over the coals for so mucn money being spent m Wellington. Figures showed that £42,000, or onefourth of the whole of the expenditure for the year had been spent m Wellington. The wreck of the Hyderabad, as she lies stranded on the beach at Otaki, was sold yesterday, and was purchased by Mr. Holmwood, brothers to the Captain, for £60. The chronometer and other articles brought the amount up to £85. The boats belonging- to the ship elicited no bid. < Mr. James Mackay has issued his address to the Waikato electors. The meeting pledged themselves, to endeavor to secure his election. . CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. •• The Premier arrived -yesterday afternoon. He was received at the railway station by the Mayor and City Councillors, and was warmly greeted by a huge assemblage. He then, with the Mayor, and Hon. J. Fisher, drove round a part of the town, drawing up at Cbker's Family Hotel, where the Mayor entertained the Ministers and a number of gentlemen at luncheon.- In the evening the Premier visited the theatre, where he was greeted with much applause and some hisses, but the latter were immediately suppressed.
