Political circles "in Wanganui are somewhat excited over the forthcoming contest between the Knight and the ex-Colonial Treasurer. Sir William Fox's friends see the mistake now when it is too late. They did not dream of Mr. Ballance standing for Wanganui, where his calling and election are sure. Sir William had made up his mind that he would walk-over for Wanganui, while Mr. Ballance would have a stiff fight with the Rangitikei local candidate. Sir William has been completely euchred, and his friends are looking about for means to assist tbe contingency of his being left out entirely in the cold. They arefconsoling themselves with the notion that if he is ousted by Wanganui it will be easy enough |to get |some small constituency candidate to retire in his favor ; but he will here also probably reckon without his host.
