UNION CO.'S S.S. PENGUIN.
The Tarawera, formerly known as the Penguin, has been purchased specially for the coastal service, and she is expected to arrive in Now Zealand waters in the course of a few days.' She is intended to relieve the Ladybird on the East Coast; As respects size and accommodation she is similar to the s.s. Hawea, so that there can be no doubt she is admirably adapted for the trade. The Rotomahana is 1,800 tons gross register tonnage, with engines of 2,000 indicated horse power. 'Her accommodation will be of the best possible kind, as in arrangements and fittings the best models have been followed. Amongst noticeable features we may mention that there are fitted up on her spar deck a capacious social hall, a smoking room, and a bridal chamber. She is capable of Accommodating about 100 saloon and 70 Second, class passengers. The cabins for saloon passengers have only two berths in each, so that ample room has been provided. The Te Anau, which is to follow shortly, will be a first-class steamer, equally adapted for the inter-colonial trade, for which she is also intended. Her tonnage, 1,600 tons, is less than the Rotomahana's, but exceeds that of the Arawata or Ringarooma by more than 500 tons. There is every reason to anticipate that the new vessels will not only maintain the high reputation of the Union Steam-ship Company's fleet, but will advance it materially and will add to the popularity the company has secured.
