The coincidences of crime are often startling, and an instance of this came under the notice of the Dunedin City Police recently. Elizabeth Mowbray pleaded guilty to stealing a boiler, the property of a Mrs. Anderson. The prisoner, on stealing the boiler, sold it to a second-hand dealer, named Johnson. Mrs. Anderson, when next she required such an article, happened to send to Mr. Johnson's to buy one, and, as much to her surprise as delight, had her own familiar "household god," in the shape of a two-gallon pot, returned to her. The New Zealand Times has the following on Parliamentary " maundcrings" : — "Mr. Manders, M.H.R. for the Lakes, has set a good example to other hon. members. He stated, in the course of his speech the other evening, that he for one was not afraid to go to his constituents 'on !>rinciple,' and that if they chose to reject um he would be quite conteut in pursuance of that principle, to direct his attention to some other pursuit ; and the hon. gentleman even went so far as to fnform an admiring audience that he would be prepared to shoulder his pick and shovel if nothing better turned up. We have heard that but one step separates the subiime from the ridiculous, but this is the first time we ever thoroughly appreciated the narrowness of the chasm which separates the Parliamentary honorarium from those, wages which aro the reward of honest and perspiring toil."
