NAPIER.
This Day. The ceremony of driving the first pile of the Port Ahuriri Bridge was carried out yesterday with great eclat. A half-holiday was proclaimed and all places of business were closed. The Volunteers and Fire Brigades marched in procession to the side of the bridge, where the ceremony was performed by Mr. J. Sheehan amidst much cheering. Hon. Colonel Whitmore, Hon, J. W. Wilson and other notables were present. Mr. Sheehan addressed the assemblage very briefly. In the evening a public meeting was held in the Theatre Royal which was crowded to excess. Messrs. Sheehan, Wliitraore, Rees Buchanan, and others made speeches, all of which were well received, Mr. Sheehan especially, wno had quite an ovation. An election meeting was held at Taradale last evening, when three of the candidates, Messrs. Russell, Sutton, and Maney, explained their views. A vote of confidence in Russell and Sutton, and promising them support in the election, was carried against an amendment in favor of Maney.
