AUCKLAND.

This Day. Mr. Seymour George received last night a vote of confidence from the Rodney electors at Warkworth. It is stated that £3000 has been subscribed to start a paper on the antiGrey principles. A central committee has been formed to secure the return of members to Act in concert with Sir George Grey in carrying liberal measures.

George Regnold, the actor, was a through passenger to 'Frisco by the mail steamer. Honi Karaka Tawiti stands for the Northern native electorate and is opposed by Hone Mohi Tauhai and Heta te Hara. At Cambridge a Miss Marshall took poison by mistake, but is now out of danger. A man named Gardiner had a miraculous escape from a frightful death at the bridge at Hamilton. He fell from the trestle-work, 45 feet high, clear of the trestle and into the cutting, a total depth of 60 feet. He was severelyjshaken, but othet wise unhurt. An important shipping case was tried at the R.M Court. It was that of M'Donald v. M'Gillivray, a claim of £8 12s. The plaintiff nis a seaman on the Wanaka, and the defendant is master of j

the steamer. The claim was for wages in lieu of notice, plaintiff being discharged with twenty-four hours' notice. The Magistrate decided that until a seaman had; worked a month or earned a month's wages there could be no agreement for twenty-four hours' notice — that was, of course, assuming that the man was guilty of no misconduct justifying his immediate discharge. Judgement was therefore given for the plaintiff with costs.
