• This Day. Thomas Mason, an old settler, has decided to contest the Hall seat against Henry Jackson, the late inemoer. A meetin g of members of the Liberal Association* and of persons favorable to its objects, was held on Saturday night. Sir G. Grey spoke at considerable length. A resolution was passed congratulating the country on the formation of a Liberal Associaton. Mr. Montague L. Browne (son of "Snyder") agent for Mr. Delias, was yesterday afternoon thrown out of his buggy on tho Hutt, sustaining a fracture of the thigh and other injuries. A lady who was with him was severely shaken. George Fisher, one of the candidates selected by the committee of the Liberal Association, finding that the Disqualification Act would necessitate his resigning his position on the Hansard staff to render himself eligible for election, has announced his intention to retire from the contest. A committee of chiefs nominated for the defence of the Native prisoners have decided to lay the following m the form of a manifesto before all tribes interested m confiscated lands : — (1). The Natives will resort to no acts of violence m asserting their claims, but will leave everything m abeyance presumedly on condition that the Government will take no further action regarding surveys or occupation for the present. (2). Respecting confiscated lands the committee, through their solicitors, are preparing an Act to enable a test case to bo brought before the Appeal Court, and if then there should be any questions that the Court decline tho responsibility of settling the matter, it be. sent before Her Majesty m Council, when the whole question will be gone into and finally disposed of. Some dissent having been expressed to the committee of the Liberal Association electing candidates, a full meeting will be held to-morrow night to decide the question.
