CAPTAIN PORTER REPLIES TO MR. W: H. TUCKER'S LETTER.
[To the Editor of the Herald.] Sir, — " Are wo to accept your assertion that you are a Liberal in the ordinary acceptation of the 'term?" To this I reply as far as Liberal opinions and principles aro consonant with the constitutional Government of the Colony, I am a Liberal in the ordinary and extraordinary acceptation of the term. "As no political convictions were enunciated by Captain Porter, &c.j &c.,"— see Mr. Tucker's letter — to this I most emphatically give contradiction and say that the character of Fluellensuits most admirably yoTir correspondent. In the event of the re-consideration of this vote of want of confidence being taken up when Parliament meets, and if I am returned to represent this East Coast, Mr. Tucker may rest perfectly contented when I hereby pledge him the word of a gentleman and a soldier — that I will still support a Liberal Ministry, no matter who the men may be who compose it. I am, &c, T. W. IORTER. Gisborne, August 16th, 1870. "
