NEW PLYMOUTH.

This Day. Two prisoners made an attempt to escape from gaol yesterday. One is named Hall, from Dunedin, under sentence of ten years, the other Maori is named Hinoki, recently sentenced to one year for horse stealing. Hall rushed past the gaoler, and bolted out. Hinoki followed, but was caught before he could get outside. Hall was followed and recaptured m Woodley Stream, swimming with just his head above water. The whole affair did not occupy an hour from the time he escaped until Hall was recaptured. The intention of the prisoners was to make for Parihaka, and seek Te Whiti's protection. Extra vigilance has oeen kept on the prisoners lately m consequence of a conversation overheard that if they escaped, Te Whiti would protect them the same as Hiroki.
