[Pbk Tarabua at Bluff] It is understood that the Prince of Wales will not visit the Sydney Exhibition, but it is not unlikely that Prince Leopold will do so. Earl Derby, addressing the Lancashire Farmers' Club on the relations of landlord and tenant, recommended farmers to keep down their numbers by immigration to America or Australia, where there was room for centuries to come. Sir Arthur Gordon was presented with a farewell address by the Aborigines' Protection 'Society, expressing approval of his Fiji policy. Reports having been circulated m Victoria that Mr. Gladstone and the other leaders of the Liberal party viewed with favor Mr. Berry's recent mission, and sympathised with the objects he had m view, Mr. Gladstone has publicly stated that Mr. Berry had no conversation of a political nature with him, but he does not doubt that he thinks the deliberate judgment of the greater number will ultimately prevail. He continued : — I do not know how ultimately it may be arranged, but I think it is desirable that the matter should be amicably settled on the spot and without resort to us. The Union Co's new steamer Rotoraahana has been launched from the building yards of Denny Bros. , Dumbarton. She is about 1800 tons measurement, and is described as being entirely steel, with compound direct acting engines of 500 horse-power nominal. Mr. W. H. Smith, First Lord of the Admiralty, at a Conservative banquet, stated that when peace was established m South Africa the colonists would have to take upon themselves the duty of protecting themselves against the savage tribes on their boundaries. Carlotta Patti has accepted a year's engagement m Australia, at the termination of which she retires from the stage. The total war expenditure at the Cape to June 30 -was £1,222,000.
