THE LATE MEETING IN THE BOROUGH COUNCIL CHAMBER.

[To the Editor of the Herald.] Sir, — " An Elector," who writes m your* paper of yesterday, seems to take a very fair view of the subject. That it was foreseen that the meeting would be looked on as not altogether impartial, is obvious from the remarks of at least one of the speakers, who suggested they would be looked on as a one* man committee, and that there would be some difficulty m getting the other candidates to treat with them as unbiassed. Indeed, lam informed that it was more than once proposed that the meeting should then and there select a man and oommeuce to work for him at once. Now, I think that unless the minds of the proposers of such selection were already made up, they would have preferred to at least hear the other candidates. Common prudence, to say nothing of justice, would suggest that where an impartial selection has to be made from four or five, or even three men, it would be most unfair to proceed, m the absence, of those unrepresented, to the ohoioe of one man already mentally decided on by a majority of the would-be choosers. Of course, I don't for a second deprecate the right af the same men to form themselves into a committee to seoure the return of the man they fancy, but that should be done under the designation of Mr. So-and-So's committee. Forgive me if 1 differ from you, and express the very decided opinion that the meeting, judging from the report, showed a strong inclination to nominate a man and commence working for him at once.— l am, &c, -^ Fair Play.
