THE ATTACK ON MR A. Y. ROSS.
- [To tiu Editor of the HKRAttt] Sir, — The leading spirit of your contemporary has once again sullied his pen by indulging in scurrility, and this time Mr. A. Y. Ross is the victim. This wretched representative of journalism commences by asserting that he does not know Mr. Ross; but immediately afterwards, pretends to be ; perfectly well acquainted with him, inasmuch as that he refers to him first of all as being " a carpenter on a level with his peers," and again as a true representative of the " ignorance of Poverty Bay." Towards the close of his leading article, this unique specimen of the genus Editor terms Mr. Ross as a fi semi-chartist, arch-republi-can and back-stairs agitator. " The first disclamation of all knowledge of the identity of Mr. Ross, and the subsequent presumption of pointing him out distinctly,, must even to the mos^ ordinary mind appear to be an anomaly — although proving the lack of logical reasoning an Editor is supposed to possess. Ndw'ji as regards ' * ignorance,", I would like much to know if Mr. Ross would be guilty of penning the following, sentence, which I clip from your .contemporary, and therefore naturally suppose is the production of the erudite Editor:— "Put what Mr. Ross's selectors "especially" sees in him to trot him out as oveufittingly endowed with the pre-requisites of a gentleman capable of adequately "representing the interests "of Poverty Bay," we are at a loss to discover ; and if (in the highly edifying words of the advertisement) it is merely to ' ' bring the petroleum prominently " before capitalists and speculators," we think Mr. Ross had better stay at home, or, at any rate, that those who are invited to subscribe towards this mission, had better keep their money in tlieir pockets." As Mr. Ross is, in my opinion, fully equal to the task of defending himself, I shall be content with these few lines and respectfully subscribe myself. — Yours faithfully, Outsider.
