Innocent females astonish traders occcassonally. The other afternoon one went to a bootmaker and bought a pair of shoes. The shopman was m the act of sprinkling some French chalk powder inside, so they might slip on easily. She glanced furtively at him and remarked : "I know what you're doing." He smiled acquiescence, She slid towards the door and said m tones that startled the nerves of the assistant, " You can't chloroform me, mister ; I waa fooled once before, and I'm blamed if I do it again." And she left without her shoes.
