This Day. A deputation from Hawera waited on Sir George Grey and Colonel Whitmore urging the Government to take prompt and decisive steps m reference to the Native difficulty. The Premier replied that it was considered the recent re-in-forcementa, with those shortly to be sent, would be sufficient. Colonel.Whitmore said if necessary, three thousand men could be placed on the Plains within one week. At a meeting of the Sydney Exhibi-. tion Commissioners a detail " progress report" was presented by Dr. Hector, showing that the sum of £495 5s 6d had been spent m advances to local communities up to 30th June. The commissioners have voted additional sums, amounting to £1018 2s 6d for the use of local committees and as special grants to exhibitors, also for the rent of St George's Hall as a depot for the reception aud packing of exhibits to the 9th of August ■>next. Court, a half-witted girl sued a person named Gold for £75, money she had lent him The magistrate spoke m very harsh terms of the way m which the defendant deliberately swindled the poor girl, and then sold off .her furniture with the object of bolting. The defendant was ordered to pay the full amount and costs forthwith, or go to gaol for three months.
