THE S.S. TAUPO.

The contractors for [raising the steamship Taupo finally abandoned the work on the Bth instant, their efforts having proved unsuccessful. On Tuesday last, everything was got in readiness to complete the •work of raising the steamer. A sail was fixed in position so that it could be drawn under the vessel as soon as an opportunity presented itself, and the two centrifugal pumps used in the last attempt were got into working order. • The contractors felt confident of success, and half an hour more would have seen the Taupo afloat, when a wave coming in with the tide, which hacl just turned, struck the stranded vessel, aud carried away a portion of the gear, and so rendered all the previous - work futile. As the contract time expired on Monday last, it was reluctantly decided to abandon the undertaking. The contractors have been most unfortunate as regards the weather, this being the third time that some portion of the gear has been carried away. A" large sum of money has been expended in the attempt, and great sympathy is expressed for the contractors, who, it would appear, have indeed been unfortunate. The amount of the contract ■was £6,500, and had the sea remained calm for half an hour after the final attempt waa commenced, the contractors would, iuateadof losing many hundred pounds, have netted a fair reward for their patience and perseverance. We expect that that the insurance companies, taking the circumstances into acconnt, will grant au extension of time, and, should two or three daya of calm weather be experienced, there is little doubt that the vessel may yet be raised.— Bay of Plenty Times.
