NAPIER.
This Day. Mr. Kenny, 8.M., aa Trust Commissioner under the "Native Land Fraud Prevention Act," decided yesterday the matter m connection with Arihi, commonly known as " Princess Alice," and the Heretaunga Block. In 1870, Arihi with other Natives, executed with consent of her reputed husband and trustees, a deed confirming the previous conveyance of her interest m the Heretaunga property to the present European owners.
A question afterwards arose as to Arihi's power to confirm the conveyance, as she was stated to have been then under age. The present owners, therefore, now proposed to give her £1500 cash, and a hundred acres of land m consideration of her signing another confirmatory deed. Messrs. Carlile and Lascelles appeared for Arihi, and consented to the offer. Mr. Wilson for himself, and fellowtrustee, Parvis Russell, opposed it, on the ground that under the Trust Deed the property was settled on Arihi and her children, and all payments must, be made to the Trustees. The Commissioner decided to give his certificate, which means that the transaction is not m contravention of the Act ; but if otherwise illegal, then the. risk will be with those who pay the money. Mr. Wilson gave notice ef appeal.
