We are infprmed that an agitation ia ou foot, and that a public meeting of the .settlers; at Makaraka, Ormond, Waeranga-a-hika and Matawhero will: shortly be held, with the view of petitioning the Hon. J. Fisher, Postmaster-General, to establish a daily mail .communication from Gisborne to those rising and populous distKictp, :V I* i» time,, we think, that the Postal authorities conceded to tlie.se adjacent tqwjiships a daily mail,, but whether they will do so or not depends entirely on the exertions of those most interested in the matter. It is a ; maxim with most colonial governments " that nothing be given without beiiig asked for, and then b.ut little unless importunately insisted upon." In this case there appears. to be no one to ask or insist upon obtaining what will be an absolute boon to the settlers, without involving, at the most, the very moderate expenditure of £100 per annum. Being left entirely to their own resources, and ignored by their so called Parliamentary representatives, who deem it beneath their dignity to enquire into their wants, or consult their wishes, and who, rather than be bored with' any commissions -from their constituents, purposely"*" abstain froni" visiting them any more frjecjuently than? i once a year, they -must. in, consequence, by united action, endeavor to gain their jxriut in this matter* That they will succeed we have no manner of doubt, but in our opinion no time should be lost" in calling the meeting and obtaliUng'signatures to the ihemorial. so that the very serious injuries arising from the delays consequent upon , the present service might Aat once be abated. upon arrival were despatched daily to the above mentioned districts, and our country friends would not as they now do,|in such numbers, throng the office, receiving as they would their letters at their own doors. With these few comments we leave the matter to those who are unquestionably able to conduct it to the desired issue. Let the petition be at once prepai'ed, and forwarded as we think it should be, through our respected Chief Postmaster, who, no doubt, would favourably represent the case to the Postmaster General and making allowance for red-tapeism, in due time all cause for grievance^ we trust will be removed.
