• : [Per Albion, at the Bluff.] The degree of " Rebekah" has been instituted in the Order of Oddfellows in Melbourne as a means of including the wives of members in the Order, and of enabling them to claim assistance when needed. ' The Mystery, labor vesasl, has arrived at Sydney. She reports that the natives of Aoha fired at the crew and captain. The latter landed and burned the villiage, regaining the vessel without loss. News from New Caledonia received in Sydney states that a number of Communists, sentenced for larceny, escaped from gaol by cutting up their blankets into strips and making a hook of a bucket handle. With the aid of these they scaled the prison wall. They ! were, however, re-captured. • Sleigh, the Grafton bushranger, has been run to earth. He was surprised while at dinner in the bush, and was covered by the police revolvers before he could fire or escape. A petition requesting the Government to repeal the tax on Chinese immigrants is being extensively signed in Brisbane. Ned Kelly recently visited Greta to see his sister. The Victorian police got to know it, and started in pursuit, only to find that the bird had flown. The Victorian detectives have recovered about £450 of the £5000 alle ged to have been stolen from the Avoca by Weiberg. The first report of the amount found was exaggerated. The Victorian Government are considering whether the officials of the Provincial and Suburban Bank are not liable to prosecution for having sworn to incorrect declarations respecting the extent of the bank's notes in circulation. The coffee palace movement in Melbourne is attracting great attention.
