This Day. A fire broke out at half-past one on Saturday morning in a fiuit and oyster shop opposite the Bank of New Zealand. Tiie upper part was soon in flames, but though a smart breeze was blowing, a brick wall confiued the tire to the single building, and it? was soon extinguished. The stock was mostly removed. Lewis, proprietor, had only just left. His stock was to be sold by auction in a day or two. A meeting of unemployed was held on Saturday afternoon in the Cathedral square. Resolutions carried urging, the Government to subsidise the Borough Council pound for pound for their relief ; to prevent the influx of Chinese, and reduce the present rate of immigration.
