•Vanderbilt is buying steel rails m England, because he considers the material better than American. Louisiana is threatened with depletion of agricultural labor, m consequence of negroes flocking westward. An Irish Colonisation Convention has been started at Chicago, for the purpose of securing a settlement for poor Irish Catholics upon lands m America. Tilden stock for the next presidential election is rising. Gustavus Howard, an American commercial agent at Pago Pago, Cainaa, has written to Washington, urging the Government to make Samoa a naval station and colony. An American war ship has been ordered to Samoa. American mules are being embarked for South Africa. There has been a bitter debate m the Senate upon a proposal to grant a pension to Mr. Jefferson Davis as a veteran of the Mexican war. While Senator Lamar extolled the ex-Con-federate President as a patroit, he was denounced by Senator Chandler as a traitor. After some angry recriminations between the Northern and Southern senators, the proposal was finally rejected by 23 against 22 votes.
