CAPTAIN T. W. PORTER.
[To the Editor of the Evening Herald.] Sir,— l have read two letters in thia morning's paper, signed respectively " Trumpeter >r and "Ajax." To the first I would reply, that if the Government have asked Captain Porter to take command of the natives on the West Coast, it is they, the Government, who should be taxed with having forgotten Hopata and others, who, he alleges, are more worthy. Of " Ajax " I ask, do you know nothing of Captain T. W. Porter's career I are you not aware that since he was a corporal attached to the big gun at Pukeamionga, under Fox, it has been one unvaried success ? Do you not know how he chased the Uriweras, and of the flight from Maungapohatu 1 Have you never heard of his numerous engagements and hairbreadth escapes 1 And as regards land purchasing, do you mean to say that he has not been equally successful ? But it is impossible to satisfy some people. You probably wanted the appointment yourself, or for some of your friends. I dismiss you with scorn as one un« acquainted with the subject. Vajloub,
