The second heavy and prolonged down-: faU ofrain.hap caused all the riyers , to be heavily flooded. This morning the Waiamata had become a torrent, ! .rushing into, the >Tureharu , Biver m tremendous ypJunae. The flood of waters brought.with them an immense -r quantity- of dead timber, trunks of n ; t uprooted trees, and much drift. The ?'• 'Turehttru has not' been so high for ' .t ; ,oyer, tw^b; £ear&' ■ Shotild the 6ast [ gale '^^Wnue^^coi^med" ty the fti the time. j () 6^ .writing, ti^is, wjb may fear .haying \r.i toilearhtthat considerable damage has ii Oftein sustained m the low-lying portions of the up-coiinl#y districts. We can weU do without another big dis-J aster 'added -to those we- have had to endure since the opening of the pre- " sent year. A fever epidemic, which has left so fmariy sad blanks m our households j a long and cruel drought, ■ which' the land and destroyed so much vegetation ; the collapse of trade; the outside pressure for money there wasV no money 7 ; the bursting up of business men ; the oppressive machinery of the law which knows and shows no
mercy ; the fall on the price of our great staple ; any one of these is a disaster m itself. But they have come one on top of other, allowing of no breathing time, never admitting of any rallying points. A destructive, mischievous flood at the present time would be the baptisement to our many misfortunes. Our Churches prayed for rain. We can only hope they will not have to offer up supplication that it may cease.
