ROWING NOTES.

In anticipation of the great rowing events coining off the week after next, i h%vefyisited the banks of the Taraheru m hopes of obtaining an insight as to the relative strength of the different crews. Spjsnobr's Crjcw, m the Mermaid, have been out together once, and show up well, although a little unsteady. Bow is m very i|air iorm, and pulls his oar well through the water, notwithstanding his want of practice this year ; while .No. 2, who has been m constant practice throughout the season, shows great waut of energy to be very effective, and is rather late m taking the water. No. ais very powerful, and will be of great use m the boat if he will only correct his faults. Although Mr. Bouncer, m iustruoting-yerdant Green, advised him to put AisiSar iri ; deep' and putt- |t out with a jerk, a Dill it is not the most effective style, and is a great waste of energy. (Stroke is fair and strong, but ins tune is defective ; he should be very particular m pulling a regular stroke throughout, and vary tne length of it as frequently -as She appears to do. The condition of 3 and stroke is already j good, notwithstanding the former's \supertiuouß fleah ; and 2 and' bow Want more breathing exercise, but after a fortnight's practice they promise to make things hot tor their rivals' in the Undine. (Skbbt's Crew, m the Undine, who are, we see, most regular m practice, show veryjtair Btyle, and a quicker stroke than the preceding crew, but there is still plenty of room for' improvement. i3ow is not m good form ; he is too short aud slow m coining forward, does not get a good square hold of the water, and rows out too much with his arms, spooning m doing so, and altogether wauts a lot. of practice and careful poaohing to bring him up to the mark. No. 2 is, I Bee, fast dropping down to his old form, but cannot break himself of the bad habit of rowing too far back, and wasting his strength |behind his seat.' No.' 3 rows a strong oar, "but must pay more attention to time; while stroke, if he will be only a little smarter m the recovery, will soon: #e f m fair style. Their condition, with the exception of bow, looks well, considering the earliness of the practice, aud promises well for the future. *tf-- 1 >-■-■; Oarriok's Crew ■■{■. i*f, Mejrmaid's " ) shape well also. Bow is not regular m his attendance, and I have Wen .as yet unable to see him m his own boat, but he will require more energy before he is nt ; 2 pulls a strong oar, but jerks too much ; is m fair time, and will improve with practice. 3 pulls a strong oar ; is m good time , has a good hold of the water, but a little too far back m his recovery, and should put his weight more at the commencement of his stroke. Stroke is improving fast ; pulls a fair oar, with good style, and is break* ing himself of his jerky recovery. Raiguffels Crew, although they have not been all out together, promise to give their opponent a hard struggle. Bow is rather raw as yet ; wants ooaching into proper style out he has strength that will be effective when the form is put into him. 3is a strong oar, and, with a little practice, will be very effective. Strove is m fair style, but slow m recovering ; pulls with rather a square elbow, but has good time and condition ; and altogether, when this crew is got into hand and practised, they will be hard opponents to leave behind, and will give Oarrick's crew their work to get away from them.
