NAPIER.

This Day. An attempt was made last evening to set fire to the Napier District School ; but fortunately, the attempt was un-' successful. At about half-past 9 o'clock, Mr. Dean was passing the School, when he observed a blaze of fire at the rear of the building. He at once hastened to the spot, and found two heaps of paper, and shavings piled up m the back yard against the building, both ofwhich were on fire. One heap was on the door-step, and the other heap was about a couple of yards off, both being close to the wall of the building. Mr. Dean stamped the fire out, and then discovered that the heap on the door step had been saturated with kerosene ; and some oil had been poured on the step. The wall of the building was charred by flame, but no further damage was done The matter has been placed m the hands of the police. The General Manager of the Union Insurance Company, now m Napeir, has arranged with the directors of the Hawkes Bay Insurance Company, to take over on satisfactory terms the whole business of the latter Company. There will be a large gathering of Natives and Europeans at Pakowhai today, to hear the reading of the late chief Karaitiana's will. A fire occurred at the Ohira bush, Patangata, on Friday last, by which a four-roomed house, and furniture, the property of Mr. Floyd, were completely destroyed.
