This Day. The railway between Greymouth and Hokitika will shortly be commenced at both ends. Mr. Gisborne and Mr. Seymour George, M.H.R's for the West Coast waited on the Minister of Education yesterday, with a viow of obtaining an advance of £1000 for the Westland Board of Education, for building purposes. Mr. Ballanco promised to accede to the request. There were symptoms of riot on the wharf yesterday afternoon. By the Omeo, from Newcastle, there were 15 Chinese passengers for Port Chalmers. A crowd assembled round the vessel on her arrival, and after gazing at the Celestials for some time m ineffacaeble disgust, the crowd commencd to relieve their feelings by throwing whitening and other missiles, at them. The Chinese took refuge under the forecastle head, and some of them retaliated by " shieing " lumps of coal at the crowd. The police came and soon dispersed the small crowd. At a meeting of the Sydney Exhibition Commissioners, Dr. Hector stated that 50 applications for space had been received from Dunedin, 39 from Wellington and many, more expected from other parts yf the colony.
Sir George Grey and Mr. Sheehan left m the Hinemoa yesterday afternoon for the Bay of Islands. They expect to be m Auckland on Saturday, and from thence they go to attend the native meeting.
