THE RETORT COURTEOUS.
The Dunedin Btarbor Board lately received a letter from Captain Fahrchild through the Marine Department, t Wellington, stating that when the Hinemoa, was crossing out over the Otago bar on the sth instant the vessel touched once ; that the leading beacon* were just in a line when the vessel grounded ;. .that there was a vefy little sea oil at the time ; that the Hinomoa's draught was 1 only 14 feet, 4 inches ; and it was just about low water when she crossed the bar. The secretary of the Harbor Board replied to the Marine Department, Wellington, by instruction* frotn the ohairman of the, board, that ais vessels of much greater^ draught of water than the Hinemoa are constantly being taken in and out of the port of Otago (both with or without a pilot), .without touohing when crossing the bar, there is no special reason apart from the guiding or steering of the, vessel why she shotild vtouph, and that the board would respectfully suggest that. the Government issue instructtionq to Captain Fairchild avail himself of the services of a pilot on his visits t'o the port of Otago, when it will be sejh that the Hinemoa, even under the most unfavorable circumstances, will be navigated in and out without touching.
