Poverty Bay Herald AND East Coast News Letter. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. MONDAY, MARCH 31, 1879.

This afternbon brings to a close tKfe first quarter of a new year, m which the Herald has" been l lssued "under its present editorial control. We hope we shall not appear to our readers as guilty of presumption, or bbastfulness, when we state that the efforts wade .to.improve the tone and character of .this journal, for general information and intelligent comment, have been successful beyond our most sanguine expectations. The assurances we have received, and the flattering notices w.e have had forwarded to us from so many quarters, from friends, and from strangers, have certainly been the means of stimulating pur . work — making it a work of pleasure. From the commencement of the new editorial management/ we have, 3 we hope, . pursued an independent jcqursj?, ' while ..we have allowed nothing offensive or of a personal nature to appear m our columns which .coujcl jar upon good taste, or the intelligence of those whom we address ; 'and 'here the writer of this takes the present opportunity of mentioning that from the hour he took charge of the columns of the Herald to the present, he has exercised his own undivided control. It is .-due to directors and shareholders alike to state, and this we do without fear of contradiction, that the policy and course of the paper has not been once interfered -with by any outside pres-' «ure. The editor has not even re-

ceived so much as a suggestion from any one having a pecuniary interest m the IJerald. Whatever has been good, the editor claims the praise due for himself ; and whatever friay have been its errors or shortcomings, the writer of this takes the full blame upon himself. He has been left completely untrammelled and uninterfered with, and while he cannot but feel proud at the confidence which has been placed m him, he may state that such confidence and trust is the only way by which any journal can hope to become a success, or to exercise that influence which should be expected from every representative journal . of the Fourth Estate. The Herald is now issued at a regular hour every afternoon, m time for the tea-table, and" we do. not know of a single habitation m the town or suburbs at whose door one or other of our several runners does not leave a copy. In the morning the Herald is (with a few exceptions, where our subscribers live at a great distance) delivered iri time to be laid on the breakfast-table. We have shown, and it is now generally acknowledged, that one newspaper issued daily morning and evening throughout the towns, subui'bs, and districts, meets all present requirements, whether for publicity desired by .advertisers, or for the intelligence sought for by readers. It will be seen that we give attention m our columns to events happening, and matters agitated, m all parts of New Zealand and the Australian Colonies. We do so for this reason — that the people of Gisborne and Po-verty-Bay have, for the very greater number, been dwellers m other parts of the Islands, and are naturally desirous to know what is passing oxitside of the district m which they reside. Our exchange list being a very large one, we have only to give . our" industry" m compiling matter which shall be interesting to all classes of readers. In this we believe we have also been successful. We can only say that no efforts will be left untried that we may continue to deserve the approval and support which has been so liberally accorded to the Herald.

We have just a few more words to say m connection with the Herald. The manager, m taking charge of the office, found that the' job printing had been carried to Wellington, Auckland and Napier, by what he believes to have been a most improper "local- combination* iq. v&isp. tha prices for job printing work. The present manager ■would admit of no such combinatioii ; but; at once assimilated his rate of charges to those of Auckland and Wellington. The wages paid to printer^ «*e no higher m Gisborne than m any* other" towns of the Colony ; nor is stationery or printing material appreciably higher. In making an immediate reduction m. the tariff of charges m job printing the business has increased so largely, that We have fdtihd it necessary to enable to us complete the number of orders received, to make further additions to our job printing department. By. the" Rotorua, -which arrived yesterday from Melbourne, we were placed m possession of a large quantity printers' Material from, the celebrated type foundries of Messrs /Miller Richai'ds, which, includes some of^the latest novelties and designs m ornamental types and borders. We have also received a large consignment of printing and commercial statioiie'ry, which will enable us to execute the work entrusted to us with the same neatness, taste, and expedition, as'iti the best offices of the Colony.
