A GREAT WALKING FEAT.

Another great walking feat is -being attempted by C. P. Weaton, and is to consist of a distance of 2000 miles to bo walked m 1000 hours, with the addition of 50 lectures to be delivered at the principal towns on the way. A bet has been laid with Weston by Sir John Aslley of £500 to £100 that he will not succeed m his undertaking. Three j udges accompany him, a .bicyclist, and his aer- . , pant, for whom an omnibus and relays > of horses are provided. Weston started January 18th, at midnight, from the Royal Exchange, and by half-past 8 the same evening reached Folkeston, a distance of 81 miles, Howell, the Cambridge ' pedestrian, walked the whole distanoe with him. Between Lewes and Brighton thousands of persons accompanied him. and so great was the crush that he had ; to escape into a shop, and it was with '" much difficulty that he got to the room • where he was to lecture. Portsmouth was reached at mid-day of the 22nd, and Winchester the evening of the' same day, Weston lecturing at. each place. * Every town he has entered, Weston has been surrounded by immense .crowds,. - which have often hindered him considerably, although m most instanceis the police have done their best to assist him. At times he has shown great fatigue, but after a few hours rest he starts again as vigorously as ever. Exeter was reached on Saturday, 25th, and while still four miles off numbers of persons met him, and by the time he entered the city Weston was escorted by about 10,000 people, through who it would have been impossible to force his way, had not the .police formed a ring round thj^~ omnibus with a strong rope, 1 walking: Ha' the enclosed space.
