SUNDAY TRADING.
A clever and novel method (says the Age) of evading the Sunday closing regulations is adopted m the north end of Dunedin. We have been authentically informed that on Sunday last, a little boy entered a certain hotel (which of course must be nameless, for we despise the distinction of an informer), and called for Is 6d worth of .beer. The landlord refused to serve the boy but promised to let "Jemmy" have it, if he was. sent round. Now this "Jemmy" happens to be neither more nor less than a large black retriever dog, who has been trained to fetch beer from the hotel when he his sent. Shortly after the boy departed, "Jemmy" made his appearance with a billy m his mouth, containing the eighteen-pence. The landlord having measured out the liquor, put it on the floor for the dog to take it away, but he absolutely refused to stir, and when a gentleman attempted to lift the billy "Jemmy" growled savagely. It then occurred to the landlord that he had forgotton to bribe " Jemmy" with his accustomed biscuit. This negligence was repaired, and Jemmy, wagging his tail, as dogs will do, lifted the billy and walked triumphantly homewards. ' ' Ain'tyou afraid of getting prosecuted ?" asked the onlooker. " No, no," replied boniface, with a sagacious smile, "they might punish me for supplying man, woman, or child on Sunday, but the law does not apply to maatifft."
