CHRISTCHURCH.

March 25. At a meeting of the Council last evening, the Mayor stated that he had been informed by an influetial member of the House of Representatives that if Christchurch took active steps next session, the Assembly would probably be held here. A committee was appointed to communicate with the Government, asking to place a sum on the estimates to build a residence for the Governor at Chris bchurch. At a private meeting of the creditors m the estate of Mr. Saundera it transpired tli at the trade liabilities were about £29,000. The assets are estimated at : stock, £4000 ; book debts, £6000. The failure is ascribed to land speculations. The estate is very complicated, and it is impossible to say what will be realised.
