[To the Editor of. the EYEitfita Sir,-— lt is not generally considered' k plucky act to attack people who are 1 urt- ' abld to bit back, but you seem to take a delight m slating our local police force gaol management, knowing full well they cannot reply. In last evening's issue of the Herald, an insinuation is made that the beer stealers now m gaol, are not kept at hard labor, but occupy ftheir time m cooking fancy dishes, with which to satisfy their appetites. Now this is simply false, and had you sir, made the enquires you pretend to, have done, you would have learned that the men have i been kept constantly at work ever 'since they were sentenced. A glance at the paddock surrounding the gaol will prove that they have not been allowed to remain idle. lam rather afraid > that the ad captandum, style of writing you sometimes indulge m, occasionally causes you to do our, conservators of the peace much injustice: —I am,' <$;c.y ' ; ' •■■• ; .
