March 15. Parliament is prorogued till April 13. The Postmaster-General, speaking at a meeting at Rookhahlpton, said he would not oppose legitimate settlement on the lands, nor encourage the founding of large estates. The expenditure of the colony would have to b 8 reduced, while taxation would have ,to be increased for local expenditure to be carried out by local bodies. , The lands m Western Queensland wquld have to be made to produce food, :f or Britain, and m return they would .become a market for British manufactures. It would be necessary to extend existing lines of railway into the western districts to open up the country. He affirmed that one-third of the immigrants that were brought out to Queensland during the past three years had crossed over m New South Wales, and they had cost Queensland £20 each.
