March 24. News from New Caledonia, brought to Sydney by the Wotonga, states that Chano, a native chief, has been taken, and forty other insurgent Kanakas have been slain. These included four of the assassins of the Mastini family, and Gendarme murderers. Little resistence is now qffered' to the military . forces— indeed the revolt is virtually extinguished. Colonists are collecting their scattered live ,stock r , andreturning to their former homes. Roads are being constructed or repaired, and telegraphs extended throughout, the colony. / : , , Not more than fifty rebels are known to be at large, and these are so thoroughly demoralised that they are not likely to show any fight when found. Great hopes are now cherished that the colony, is entering on a seaton of prosperity. . ;
