Teh County Council had a narrow escape last night of a "no quorum " meeting, which would have resulted very seriously to those looking for money due to them for contracts performed ; and to those who had tendered for works, and were awaiting the decision of the Council as to whose tenders should be accepted. Mr. S. Locke had steamed all the way from Napier to be present ; Captain Porter had come thirty-eight miles from the Coast for the Bame purpose ; Mr. Villers had ridden from Ormond. And Mr. Woodbine Johnson, chairman, from his station. But it takes five Councillors to form a quorum, and here were only four. These waited the time required by the Council's byelaws.' It was just on the strike of eight ;time was nearly vp — scarcely a minute, when m walked Wi Pere, as cool and a leisurely, and as serenelooking as if he had just come out of a hair-dresser's saloon where he had been enjoying the operation of a shampoo. Then the Council Bet to work, and from eight o'clock, last night, until twenty minutes to one this morning they never ceased from, business. What was done will be found duly recored m our report. What was said, our columns, were they double their present size and number, would not contain. Four hours and twenty minutes of reading correspondence, considering the same ; opening tenders, and calculating for the lowest and best : discussing roads, bridges, culverts, and drains, deviations of highways and bye-ways, channels, fences, slaughter-houses. "What of these might be done or left undone, was the staple of the business last night and early this morning. Our reporter has done his utmost to be correct, and believes it will be found so m every essential.
