LOSS OF LIFE AND DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY.
The present month has been signalised by some disastrous occurrences There has been a dreadful colliery explosion in South Wales, resulting in a loss of six y lives. There has been two great fires, one in Birmingham, the other in
Yorkshire. The former has consumed the chief free library in that town, which is not only the headquarters of the Caucus, but the centre of all tha't is enterprising and public spirited in municipal Government. It was a noble building, containing some £40,000 worth of books. Many of these can be and will be replaced at once. But some are irrecoverrble. In the edifice was collected the special Shakespearian library containing many curious works in many different languages, being translations of, or commentaries on, the works of our greatest national poet. This collection was of world-wide fame, inoalcnlable value, and has perished completely. Profound personal pain has been occasioned in Birmingham by the calamity, and large local subscriptions are forthcoming on every side to restore all that can be restored.
