This Day. A perfect epidemic "of fires has set m. Yesterday afternoon two cottages outside the East Bell were burned down. They were insured. A strong wind was blowing at the time, and any attempt to save them would have been useless. This is the third fire m three days. The eccentric Colonel Brett, Justice of Peace, at Malvern, gave a mountedconstable m charge on Thursday for neglecting to salute him. The constable was m charge from half-past 10 m the morning until 9 m the evening, and was brought to Chrisfcchiirch m custody of a sergeant, and on arrival was immediately released by the Inspecto. At an enquiry held at the Police depot on Saturday, it was shown that Colonel Brett, after being told by the constable that ho did not know him, replied m a furious tone that he would make him know, and salute him too, and also have him kicked out of the force. He then gave the constable into [ custody. The inquiry was adjourned ! for production of witness. The con- : stable has taken proceedings against the ( Colonel for false imprisonment. The , damages laid are heavy. '.
