WELLINGTON.
This Day. The time for completing the Land Tax valuation has been extended to the 20th March. The resignation of Major Jones, 2nd battalion Otago Volunteers, and Lieut. 0. W. Ferris, has been accepted. Mr, S. H. Cox, and G. J. Binners, are appointed Inspectors of Mines, under the "Mines Regulation Act, 1874." The Tairoa brought back the champion shot Ballinger. All the Volunteers turned out, and headed by the Artillery band, he was driven through the city with his father and brothers m a carriage, the various corps following. Mr. Henry Jackson, Chief Surveyor, has refused to resign as requested by the Government and waits dismissal. By this he forfeits £600 offered him as compensation on resigning. Law proceedings are likely to be taken by the Government to enfore payment of balance of stamp duty m the late Mr. Rhodes' estate. The executors dispute the duty as assessed. It is reported that R. C. Reid, Hokitika, is m treaty for the purchase of the New Zealander. The Sydney Exhibition Commissioners have placed £1000 at the disposal of the local committees m each town, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Auckland.
