The Boat Race.

The Heavy Crew Wins by Half a Length.

The four-oared race between a heavy and light crew of the Gisborne Rowing Club was rowed this afternoon, on the Taruheru, with the following result : — Undine — Denniston, Henderson, Balneavis Huddlestone (str) 1 Mermaid — Mills, Skeet, Spencer, Ratcliffe (stroke) 2 The crews were started by Mr. H. C. Boylan, from somewhere near Mr. Graham's, and as the time for their appearance at this end of the course approached the bank became studded with spectators. Presently both boats rushed simultaneously into view, the Light pulling about two to the minute quicker than the Heavies. On they came quite together, no bones broken, anybody's race till within 80 yards of the finish, when it became gradually apparent that the Lights had a tough job, and the Heavies just enough to do to beat them. At the flag the Heavies were just half a length ahead, the Lights struggling gamely to the end. The public sympathy seemed rather with the vanquished, as perhaps it should be. Both coxswains, Fernandez (Heavy) and E. Bourke (Ligt) steered admirably.
